For a club with the rich history of Coventry City, seeing a Sky Blue shirt amidst the white of England is a rare but incredibly proud sight.
While many international stars have graced Highfield Road and the CBS Arena representing Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, the list of players who earned a senior England cap while actually on the books at Coventry City is an exclusive club.
Only a select few have managed to impress the national manager enough to get the call-up while playing for us.
Only four players have played for England’s senior team while playing for Coventry City:
- Reg Matthews (1956)
- Cyrille Regis (1982)
- Danny Thomas (1983)
- Dion Dublin (1998)

These are the players who carried the name of Coventry City onto the international stage.
- Reg Matthews (Goalkeeper) – 1956
History was made in 1956. Reg Matthews became the first-ever Coventry City player to be capped by England. What makes this even more remarkable is that Coventry were in the Third Division South at the time! He played five times for his country, proving that talent shines through regardless of the league.
- Cyrille Regis (Striker) – 1982
A legend in every sense of the word. After terrorising defences in the First Division, Big Cyrille earned his England recognition in 1982. He came on as a substitute against Northern Ireland. His call-up was a massive moment not just for Coventry, but for black players in English football.

- Danny Thomas (Defender) – 1983
A classy right-back who is often remembered for the cruel injury that ended his career prematurely. Before that tragedy, Thomas was one of the brightest prospects in the country, earning two caps during an austere tour of Australia in 1983.
- Dion Dublin (Striker) – 1998
The last Coventry City player to wear the Three Lions. After an incredible season where he shared the Premier League Golden Boot, Glenn Hoddle simply couldn’t ignore him. Dublin earned four caps in 1998, narrowly missing out on the World Cup squad.

🎓 Made in Coventry: The “One That Got Away” List
While they didn’t get capped while playing for us, Coventry City’s Academy has produced some massive modern England stars. We take credit for them anyway!
Callum Wilson The “Cov Kid” from the academy helped fire the club back to League One before moving to Bournemouth and Newcastle. He represented England at the 2022 World Cup.
James Maddison Another product of the Sky Blue academy. Maddison dazzled fans at the Ricoh Arena as a teenager before moving on to Leicester and Spurs, becoming a regular in the England setup.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Has any Coventry player scored for England? No Coventry City player has scored a goal for the senior England team while playing for the club. However, Callum Wilson scored for England against the USA in 2018 (while at Bournemouth), making him the first Coventry-born academy graduate to score for the Three Lions.
Did Steve Ogrizovic play for England? Incredibly, no. Despite being one of the best keepers in the league for a decade, Oggy was never capped. He did, however, represent the Football League XI.
Who was the last Coventry player to be called up? Since Dion Dublin in 1998, no active Coventry player has played for the senior England team. With the club now pushing for Premier League promotion, fans hope players like Ben Sheaf or Ellis Simms might one day break that drought.
Final Whistle
It has been over 25 years since a Coventry City player pulled on the England shirt. But with the academy continuing to produce talents like Wilson and Maddison, and the club on the rise again, the next name on this list might be just around the corner.
