🕰 A Legacy from 1509
Tucked away down Greyfriars Lane in central Coventry stands Ford’s Hospital — a beautifully preserved timber-framed almshouse founded in 1509 by merchant William Ford. Originally built to house five men and one woman, its role and scale expanded over the decades to include couples and more residents.
The building is a superb example of Tudor domestic architecture and showcases jettied upper floors, carved timbers and diamond-paned windows.

🏗 Survival Through Change & Adversity
Over the centuries Ford’s Hospital has endured remarkable change: from its original charitable purpose through the Reformation, to later accommodating widows, and then facing devastation during the Blitz of 1940 when a bomb struck the building, resulting in tragic loss of life and structural damage.
Despite this, the building was carefully restored in the early 1950s using original materials wherever possible. Its survival stands as a testament to Coventry’s heritage and resilience.

🎨 Hidden Histories & Architectural Splendour
Inside and out, Ford’s Hospital offers layers of history. The narrow courtyard, the carved door-frames, and the inscription over the entrance all speak of its original purpose. At one time the site may have belonged to a monastic friary, with remains of a 14th-century tiled floor uncovered after bombing.
Today, while the interior is largely private accommodation, the exterior and courtyard remain accessible for visitors to admire.
